SCENES OF THE PRIVATE AND PUBLIC LIFE OF... - Lot 270 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
SCENES OF THE PRIVATE AND PUBLIC LIFE OF ANIMALS. Etudes de moeurs contemporaines publiées sous la direction de M P.-J. Stahl Paris, Hetzel et Paulin, 1842. Two volumes large in-8, publisher's binding in green chagrin, boards decorated with five special irons, four of which are arranged at the corners, those in the centre being different on the lower and upper boards, spines decorated with special irons, inner scroll, white moiré paper lining and endpapers, gilt edges. First edition (1). Two frontispieces and 199 wood-engraved plates after Grandville; some vignettes in the text. Texts by Balzac, L. Baude, Emile de La Bédollière, P. Bernard, Jules Janin, Charles Nodier, George Sand. A superb copy in a publisher's binding decorated with animal scenes, the most desirable condition for this famous work. The special ironwork on the bindings is based on Grandville's drawings for the cover of volume II. (1) Volume I is in an intermediate state with only part of the first printing remarks noted by Carteret (III, 556-57). As Carteret indicates, these variations correspond to the reworking of certain leaves and not to a new composition. From the library of Michel Wittock (V, 2013, no. 113) with bookplate. Label from the exhibition Dix siècles de livres français, Lucerne, 1949, no. 434.
