STAËL (Mme de).
Corinne ou l'Italie. Paris, Treuttel et Würtz, 1841-42. Two volumes in-8, contemporary binding in green chagrin, two gilt fillets on the boards framing an elegant decoration of fine gilt arabesques running within a frame of cold scrolls, spine similarly decorated, gilt fillets inside, gilt edges (Rossignol). First edition. Frontispiece and numerous woodcut vignettes in the text by Thompson, Smith, Porret, Lacoste, etc. after drawings by Gérard, Vernet, Boulanger, Laville, etc. "Edition well printed on beautiful wove paper" (Carteret, III, p. 566). A superb copy in a delightful decorated binding of the period bearing the very rare signature of Rossignol. A Rossignol is quoted by Fléty (Dictionnaire des relieurs français de 1800 à nos jours): "bookbinder of the Restoration established 13 rue Saint-Dominique-Saint-Germain in Paris. At his death, in 1835, his widow continued the activity which was then taken over by his son after 1840". On his side, Ramsden (French bookbinders, 1789 - 1848) mentions a Rossignol established 4 quai des Orfèvres in 1843. Not quoted by Culot.
