Voyage sentimental. New translation, preceded by an essay on the life and works of Sterne, by M. J. Janin. Illustrated edition by Messrs. Tony Johannot and Jacque. Paris, Bourdin, s.d. (1841). Large in-8, light lavaliere long-grained morocco, straight and curved gilt fillets framing the boards with ornaments at the corners, ornate ribbed spine, inner frame of morocco decorated with 9 gilt fillets, lining and endpapers of dark lavaliere moire, untrimmed, folder, case (Mercier sr de Cuzin). First edition. Frontispiece, eleven out-of-text compositions and 170 vignettes in the text, all wood-engraved after Tony Johannot and Jacque. A superb copy, one of the rare ones printed on China paper, finely bound by Mercier for Paul Villeboeuf. As expected, the frontispiece and the out-of-text illustrations are on china paper applied to vellum. From the library of Paul Villeboeuf (1963, no. 287), with bookplate and gilt monogram on the lining.
