STERNE (Laurence).
Voyage sentimental. New translation, preceded by an essay on the life and works of Sterne, by M. J. Janin. Illustrated edition by Messrs. Tony Johannot and Jacque. Paris, Bourdin, s.d. (1841). Large in-8, turquoise blue half-maroquin with long grain and corners, spine richly decorated with a beautiful rocaille gilt decoration with floral motifs, untrimmed, illustrated cover and spine preserved (Mercier sr de Cuzin). First edition. Portrait of Sterne in frontispiece, eleven out-of-text compositions printed on chine appliqué and 170 vignettes in the text, all wood-engraved after Tony Johannot and Jacque. A very fine copy, beautifully bound, with its superb cover printed in blue and gold on glossy paper and illustrated with two portraits, including that of Sterne, preserved in mint condition. It is enriched with the illustrated prospectus (4 pages), as well as two leaves printed on satin (leaves 1 and 4 of the first booklet of the text, paginated 1-2 and 7-8) This last particularity is rare: according to Carteret, only one copy was printed on satin, destined for the Russian empress Alexandra Feodorowna, which later appeared in the Descamps-Scrive library. From the library of Paul Villeboeuf, with ex-libris and gilt monogram on the first counterfoil.
