Gulliver's travels in distant lands. Illustrated edition by Grandville. New translation. Paris, Fournier aîné, Furne et Cie, 1838. Two volumes in-8, red half-maroquin with long grain and corners, spine nicely decorated with gilt arabesques and fleurons, untrimmed, cover preserved (Canape). First edition. Woodcut frontispiece by Brévière, printed on chine volant, four title-frontispieces and 450 woodcut vignettes by Grandville. A very fine copy. Carefully washed by Hitter, the best washer of the late 19th century, it has perfectly preserved its original colour and the "velvety quality of its admirable woodcuts" (see Carteret, III, p. 578). Lined cover. From the library of Aristide Marie (1938, no. 209) with bookplate and pencil note signed by him, indicating Hitter's intervention and the date of 1899 for the execution of the binding.
