Diptych in finely and deeply carved ivory... - Lot 80 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Diptych in finely and deeply carved ivory representing the Adoration of the Magi and the Circumcision. The Adoration of the Magi: on the right, the Virgin stands with Joseph behind her, presenting the Child to the three Kings, each of whom is carrying their precious gift in their hands; Melchior offers a cup into which Jesus dips his hand; behind them, two helmeted soldiers holding their spears bend over the scene; in the background, the Shepherd's Star and part of a stable; in the foreground, a crown and a sceptre that the eldest King has placed on the ground. The Circumcision: the Child is naked on the altar while the priest bends over him to perform the operation; the Virgin kneels in the foreground while Joseph stands behind; all around, four children, two of whom are candle bearers, and, on the left, an assistant to the mohel holding a book; above the scene, the monogram of Christ surrounded by rays in clouds. Sphere in the form of a bivalve shell. Spain, second half of the 17th century Diameter: 6,6 cm - Weight: 190 g Presented open in a 19th century glass box and in an older chagrin case. (slight lacks at the edge of the two half-spheres) These small sculptures are extremely dexterous and illustrate these two scenes from the Old Testament with many picturesque details. The presence of the Circumcision suggests that this diptych sphere was commissioned by a Jesuit congregation. It is known that the Order made it its main feast day because it was on this day that the Saviour received the name of Jesus, which is the name of the Catholic Legion founded by Ignatius of Loyola.
