Enamel plate painted in grisaille and blue with gold highlig - Lot 104
Enamel plate painted in grisaille and blue with gold highlights representing Jean Lejeune, nicknamed the Father the Blind, salmon-coloured counter-enamel. The saint is depicted in bust form in an oval cartouche on a background studded with flowers; inscription all around: LE R[EVEREND].P[ERE].LE.IEUNE DIT.LE P[ERE].AVEVGLE.DE L.ORATOIRE.A.AGÊ.DE.80.YEARS; cartouche at bottom with incomplete Latin motto beginning POTENS; foliate scrolls in relief; signature P[ierre].N[ouailher].F[ecit]. Limoges, Pierre II Nouailher (c.1657-1717), circa 1700 Height: 15,4 cm - Width: 12,5 cm (important lacks at the edge) Son of a counsellor at the parliament of Dole (Jura), Jean Lejeune was born in Poligny in 1592 and died in Limoges in 1672. A member of the Oratorian congregation since 1621, he preached to the most humble in the main cities of the kingdom. The beauty of his sermons later led him to be called to the court, where he distinguished himself by his familiar instruction of the courtiers on "the duties of the great". He became completely blind at the age of 63 and lost an eye to a flux shortly afterwards. He spent the last twenty years of his life in the diocese of Limoges, devoting himself to missionary work in the parishes of the region. This portrait, by Limoges artist Pierre II Nouailher, seems to be the only known painted enamel of this great figure of local Catholicism.
