LA HARPE, Jean-François de
Lycée, or Course in Ancient and Modern Literature. Paris, H. Agasse, An VII - An XIII [1799-1805]. 16 volumes in 19 in-8 (203 x 121 mm). Rooted calf, decorative gilt border, smooth spine decorated with decorative irons, red morocco title and gum (period binding). Brunet, III, 770. First edition of this great classic. A pedagogue and literary critic, the Lycée ou Cours de littérature is the main work of Jean-François de la Harpe (1739-1803). This collection is made up of the courses that its author had given for twelve years at the Lycée. It contains details on ancient philosophers as well as passages on dramatic authors from Corneille to Voltaire, followed by passages concerning contemporary authors which are not lacking in interest. A very fine copy of the current edition (25 are known on large vellum paper), well preserved in its decorative binding. Provenance: Bibliothèque de Thoisy (ex-libris).
