Locke, John
Philosophical essays concerning human understanding, in which we show what is the extent of our certain knowledge, and the way in which we reach it. Fifth edition, revised and corrected. Amsterdam, J. Schreuder & Pierre Mortier le jeune, 1755. In-4 (253 x 195 mm) with engraved frontispiece portrait, 2 ff.n.c., XXXVII pp. 1 f.n.c. of table, 603 pp. 9 ff.n.c. Marbled calf, spine decorated, red edges (contemporary binding). Brunet, III, 1138. See PMM, 164 (London edition 1690). Beautiful large edition of this great classic which is among the "founding texts of modernity. Without having had the influence of a Descartes or a Spinoza, Locke synthesized the spirit of the initial Enlightenment in a more rigorous way than was long believed" (Vrin editor). "Locke was the first to take up the challenge of Bacon and to attempt to estimate critically the certainty and the adaequacy of human knowledge when confronted with God and the universe... It is the first attempt to analyze [human knowledge]" (PMM). Binding slightly rubbed; title and portrait slightly browned. Provenance: ex-libris E. Larnac (lawyer).
