"Since the decadence of the Empire of Rome, there is perhaps no people more worthy of being known, whether one pays attention to the great men who have appeared among them, or whether one considers the prodigious progress that the arts and sciences have made in Arabia for several centuries" (pp. 1-2). The life of Mohammed is followed by a very complete chronological treatise providing details on the life of the Caliphs. Small loss at one cover, corners a little worn. Provenance : M. Foy de Rochefort (ex-libris of the 18th century on the back of each title) - Château de Cirey (ex-libris). The Château de Cirey was the home of Émilie du Chatelet, a learned woman scientist of the 18th century, muse of Voltaire and translator of Newton's Principia.
