MAILLET, Benoît de
Telliamed, or Entretiens d'un philosophe indien avec un missionnaire françois sur la diminution de la mer. New edition, revised, corrected & augmented on the originals, with a life of M. Maillet. The Hague, Pierre Gosse, 1755. 2 volumes in-12 (162 x 96 mm) of 2 ff.n.ch., LXVIII, 240 pp. for volume I ; 4 ff.n.ch., 360 pp. for volume II. Marbled calf, smooth spine decorated, marbled edges (contemporary binding). Second edition of this important, controversial and strangely premonitory work, dedicated to Cyrano de Bergerac. By using the device of an imaginary journey to India by a French missionary, and by presenting the philosophy of the work as the beliefs of an Indian mystic, Maillet sought to make his pre-Darwinian theories of evolution acceptable. Generally speaking, the work is based on Maillet's observations throughout Europe, and relies on the study of geological age to contradict biblical chronology. A fine copy.
