ROUSSET, Jean
Les Intérêts présens et les prétentions des puissances de l'Europe, fondez sur les traitez depuis ceux d'Utrecht inclusively. The Hague, Adrien Moetjens, 1736. 3 volumes in-4 (246 x 194 mm) of XXIV, 1017 pp. for volume I; 2 ff.n.ch. (the first one blank), 816 pp. 7 ff.n.c. for volume II ; 4 ff.n.c., 879 pp. 18 ff.n.c., for volume III. Glazed calf, spine ribbed and decorated, red edges (contemporary binding). Second edition, entirely recast and with important additions. Known as a journalist or "compiler", Jean Rousset de Missy (1682-1762) contributed to the world's first collection of treatises, the Corps Universel Diplomatique du Droit des Gens (1726-1731, edited by Jean Dumont). The two-volume edition Les Intérêts présens des puissances de l'Europe (1733) was published as a practical alternative to the 8-volume in-folio Corps Universel. In it, Rousset discusses the treaty obligations of sovereign entities and links them to an analysis of their long-term geopolitical interests. Rousset's synthesis at the end of each section is representative of the diplomatic practice of his time. A fine copy with an unidentified armorial bookplate.
