[SPINOZA, Baruch]
The Key to the Sanctuary. Leiden, Pierre Warnaer, 1678. In-12 (138 x 81 mm) of 15 ff. (including the title), 531 pp. 15 ff.n.ch., 30 pp. Olive morocco, triple gilt fillet, smooth spine decorated, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Van der Linde, 10. First French edition of the Tractatus theologico-politicus (1670), whose translation by Gabriel de Saint-Glen appeared under three different titles (to circumvent censorship): La Clef du sanctuaire, Réflexions curieuses d'un esprit dés-intéressé, and Traité des cérémonies superstitieuses des Juifs, and which publishes for the first time the handwritten annotations added by Spinoza on his own copy (in the appendix entitled Remarques curieuses et nécessaires pour l'intelligence de ce livre.) This copy exceptionally contains the three different title pages (see Van der Linde 10 to 12). Spine slightly faded, otherwise a very good and well preserved copy in its olive morocco binding.
