SWINDEN, TOBIAS
Investigations into the Nature of Hellfire and its Location. Translated from the English by M. Bion. Amsterdam, 1757. In-8 (170 x 109 mm) of XVI, 271 pp. 2 engraved folding plates. Ivory vellum, smooth spine, gilt title on spine on yellow tinted background, edges speckled (contemporary binding). Caillet, III, 574; Dorbon, 4729. Beautiful edition, illustrated with two 'cosmographic' plates showing the solar system and a map of the sun inspired by those of Kircher and Scheiner. "The author deems it very much in accordance with reason to believe that there is a life to come and gives details of the punishments destined for the wicked after this life, in hell, and he asserts that the sun is the local place of hell" (Caillet). Rare foxing, title and first leaf with small holes in white margin.
