TORRE, Giovanni Maria della
History and phenomena of Vesuvius. Naples, Donato Campo, 1771. In-8 (195 x 121 mm) of XII, 298 pp. 3 ff.n.ch. (bookseller's catalogue), 10 engraved folding plates. Marbled calf, smooth spine decorated, red edges (contemporary binding). Cf. 793 Hoover (French edition of 1760 with 5 plates). Second French edition, more extensively illustrated than the first with 10 plates. Della Torre (1712-1782) was professor of physics in Naples and correspondent of the Academy of Sciences in Paris. Member of many learned societies, he brought improvements to the microscope. In his work he describes the different eruptions of Vesuvius that occurred between 1751 and 1754. Eight (of the 10) superb plates are signed by Giuseppe Aloja and offer views of Vesuvius from different angles, showing the progression of the lava. "The History an Phenomena of Vesuvius was one of della Torre's most popular books" (Hoover). Good copy.
