First edition of the French translation, taken from a manuscript found "among the papers of a man in the East India service" (introduction). It is the first Chinese work translated in its entirety. The text is accompanied by printed notes referring to the great classics such as Du Halde, Nieuhoff, Semedo and Martini. Complete with its 4 frontispieces illustrating scenes of life at the imperial court. Spine rubbed, missing a cap.
