Decem librorum moralium tres conversiones: Prima Argyroplili Byzantii, secunda Leonardi Aretini, tertia vero antiqua per capita et numeros conciliate: communi familiarique commentario ad Argyropilum adiecto. Paris, Henri Estienne, December 10, 1510. infolio (281 x 203 mm) of 126 ff.ch., 10 ff.n.ch., 36 ff.ch., 38 ff.ch. Calf on wood, boards decorated with geometrical designs, spine with nerves, 2 brass clasps (period binding). Renouard, Estienne, 7:6; lacking Schreiber and Adams. Second edition printed by Estienne (after the first of 1505). This fine edition on Aristotle's Ethics contains not only the translations given by Leonardus Aretinus, Joannes Arguropulos and Nicomachaeus, but also the important commentary written by Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples (Jacobus Stapulensis). "The authors who made the most extensive use of the Bible in their commentaries on the Ethics were those, like Lefèvre d'Étaples and his student Clichtove, who regarded Aristotelian precepts as rungs on a ladder leading towards the higher morality of the gospels. The assumption underlying this view, explicitly expressed by Lefèvre, was the basic agreement and affinity between Aristotelianism and Christianity" (The Cambridge History of Renaissance Philosophy). Skilfully restored spine.
