ARISTOTE
In hoc opere contenta: In politica Aristotelis introductio: adiecto commentario declarata. Oeconomicon Xenophontis: a Raphaele Volaterano traductum. Paris, Henri Estienne, 31 March 1511. Large in-4 (280 x 197 mm) of 36 ff.ch., 6 ff.n.ch., 172 ff.ch. Modern calf. Renouard, Estienne, 9:2; Schreiber, 10. Missing in Adams. Second edition printed by Estienne, revised and enlarged on that of 1505 translated by L. Bruni. It contains the important commentaries of Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples and was corrected by the great humanist Beatus Rhenanus (1485-1547), reader of Plato and Aristotle in Paris between 1503 and 1507. "When Thomas More wrote of Lefèvre that he was the restorer and rebuilder of true dialectic, true philosophy, essentially the philosophy of Aristotle, he was expressing the opinion commonly held in his day, that Lefèvre's greatest contribution to humanism was his attempt to recover the precise and true meaning of Aristotelian philosophy; Lefèvre accomplished this by writing new commentaries" (Schreiber) Traces of wormholes with damage to some letters. Provenance: purchase note of 17 October 1582 on title page - H.P. Kraus (ex-libris).
