ATHENAGORAS
[Graece & Latin] Apologia pro Christianis. [Translated by Conrad Gesner]. De resurretione mortuorum. [Translated by Pieter Nanning]. No place [Geneva], Henri Estienne, 1557. In-8 (152 x 93 mm) of 205 pp. Ivory vellum (17th century binding). Renouard, 115:1; Schreiber, 140; Adams, A-2102. First edition of the two main texts of Athenagoras (fl. 175/180), Athenian apologist and philosopher converted to Christianity, entitled Apology about Christians, and On the Resurrection of the Dead. "In the Apology, addressed to the emperor Marcus Aurelius, Athenagoras sought to rebut the current accusations levelled against the Christians: i.e. atheism, cannibalism, incest, etc. The Latin translation of the Apology was commissioned by Henri Estienne from the eminent Swiss humanist, naturalist, and bibliographer Conrad Gessner (1516-1565), who has added his textual comments on the Greek text" (Schreiber). This copy was a gift from Conrad Gessner to Wolfgang Haller, as evidenced by the inscription in brown ink on the title page: "Cl.[arissimo] Vuolphgango Hallero praeposito, domino et amico colendissimo Con.[radus] Gesnerus D[ons] D[edio]. Wolfgang Haller was a Swiss theologian, priest, writer and translator. Slightly short margins, otherwise a very good copy.
