Budé, Guillaume
De transitu Hellenismi ad Christianismum, libri tres. Paris, Robert Estienne, 1535. In-4 (261 x 185 mm) of 6 ff.n.ch., 132 ff.ch., 2 ff.n.ch. Glazed speckled calf, spine ribbed, speckled edges (18th century English binding). Renouard, Estienne, 41:1; Adams, B-3127; lacking in Schreiber. First edition. De Transitu was written by Guillaume Budé in 1535, in which he sets forth his conception of conversion, or purification of the soul, which he calls transition. "The whole text insists on the necessity of a progressive preparation, which takes the form of a purification of the soul; there remains, however, the moment of transition, which can also be called conversion, or, to use the Pauline image, circumcision... The word that the humanist uses to designate the leap to be made is 'transitus', a term that he will later use in the title of his last work entitled, De Transitu Hellenismi ad Christianismum" (Hélène Parenty and Isaac Causaubon, Hellenist, p. 295). Title page formerly lined, jaws partially split. Provenance: Earls of Macclesfield (North Library bookplate, drystamp on title page).
