DUMONT, Nicolas
The Coronation of King Henry the Second of this name. Without place or date [Paris, Robert Estienne, 1547]. In-8 with an engraved portrait and 20 ff. red morocco, gilt edges (Trautz-Bauzonnet). Renouard 68, no. 25; Mortimer, II, 472; Rothschild, III, 2192; Schreiber, no. 94. Extremely rare booklet relating the coronation of Henry II in Reims on 26 July 1547. According to the Croix du Maine, Nicolas du Mont is the author of this description, which is rich in details about the sumptuous clothes (mantel, tunic, satin sandals), Charlemagne's crown, as well as the one "that he had made & estoffer from the ioyaulx & rings of his chests: in which there were four large diamond tables, the two of which were the largest and most spacious that have ever been seen". The story is illustrated with a beautiful full-page woodcut depicting the coronation of the king. Estienne seems to have printed three in-8 editions of this text, all undated and very rare, one in italics and two in Roman type with different mottos on the title. This very fine copy in Roman type is further enriched with a splendid portrait of Henry II, in medallion, very finely engraved, but unsigned. The king appears in profile, wearing a laurel wreath, a quatrain in his praise under the medallion.
