[ESOPE]. Vita & fabulæ [graece]
Paris, Robert Estienne, 1546. In-4 (226 x 159 mm) of 88 pp. Speckled calf, double gilt fillet in border, corner fleurons, spine ribbed (18th century binding). Renouard, Estienne, 68/23; Schreiber, Estienne, 89; Adams A-277. Rare edition, printed in the famous 'grecs du roi' typeface. "A very rare and textually very important edition of Aesop, beautifully printed in 'grecs du roi' from an ancient manuscript in the Royal Library, thanks to which Robert Estienne was able to make several improvements and additions to the text, as stated on the title-page. This edition remained the basis for all others until 1610, and both its rarity and beauty are universally acknowledged. "Rare and beautiful... There is no edition which eclipses the value of the Greek one of 1546" (Dibdin). Some spotting or foxing. Provenance: library of the Earls of Macclesfield with their cold stamp on the first three leaves and their bookplate from the North- Library on the back cover; some old notes on the title and margins.
