It contains a new preface, written by CharLes Estienne for his nephew Henri, who was 8 years old when the book was published. "Charles Estienne's third book for children; this one deals with the names and appearance of plants and trees, with French translations of all botanical terms. This is the first of Charles Estienne's children's books to be based on original information (instead of excerpts from De Baïf), drawn from Charles's own great interest in botany" (Schreiber). 2. This fourth pedagogical work by CharLes Estienne deals with the nomenclature and cultivation of fruit trees. In order to facilitate the use by young students the very detailed index in Latin is followed by the translation in French. The subjects treated are: apricot, almond, tree, cherry, quince, fig, pomegranate, holly, olive, pear, apple, etc., as well as the work to be done (buttoning, sewing, debarking, grafting, pruning, ...). 3. A very popular work, it is the first book written for entertainment purposes. "In 1535 Robert Estienne's borther Charles, while employed as private tutor to Jean Antoine de Baïf began to prepare a series of children's books, the first of their kind. This is the first title in the series...These may be regarded as the first chidren's books, i.e. the first books roduced specifically for the entertainement (unlwike schoolbooks) as well as the edification of a juvenile readership" (Schreiber).
