The first book by Henri Estienne written in the vernacular. It is part of the trilogy of Oeuvres sur la défense de la prose française (the others are: Deux dialogues du nouveau langage françois, Geneva 1578, and Project du livre intitulé de la Precellence du langage françois, Paris 1579). "In the present work Henri claims the superiority of the French over all other languages, except Greek, which, according to him, is the most perfect language and which French most resembles" (Schreiber).
