Alphonse ALLAIS.
To be twisted. Histoire chatnoiresques. Paris, Paul Ollendorff, 1891. In-12 of (3) ff., 303 pp. (3 ff., 303 pp.) : Bradel style boards, red morocco title page, untrimmed, gilt head, covers and spine preserved (slightly later binding). First edition. Autograph signed on the false-title: to Mr Mercklein/respectful homage/A. Allais This is probably Abel Mercklein (1848-1924), theater critic, author of Les Rues de Paris (1889) and librettist. We owe him in particular Les Demoiselles du XXe siècle, a show given at the Folies-Bergères in 1894. He was, according to the Gaulois, "one of the last representatives of this polite and spiritual boulevard which was for a long time the ornament of Paris" (obituary of July 5, 1924). Restorations to the printed cover.
