Honoré de BALZAC.
La Peau de chagrin, philosophical novel. Paris, Charles Gosselin, Urbain Canel, 1831. 2 volumes in-8 with 1 frontispiece, 393 pp. and (1) f. of errata; 1 frontispiece, 354 pp. miscalculated 374, without missing [the pagination jumps from 341 to 362], (1) f. of errata: half olive basane, spine with gold and cold decorated nerves, marbled edges (binding of the time). First edition. It is illustrated with two frontispieces by Tony Johannot, woodcut by Porret and printed on China paper. The preface was not kept in the later editions. Inaugural work in more than one way, La Peau de chagrin is the first novel signed "de Balzac". It contains "the beginnings of a work that I will be proud to have attempted", the author confided to the Duchess of Castries on October 5, 1831. Beautiful copy in contemporary binding. Armorial bookplate of the marquis Terrier de Monciel, probably Antoine-René-Marie Terrier de Monciel (1757-1831), short-lived minister of the interior in June 1792. He disappeared on August 29, 1831, very shortly after the publication of La Peau de chagrin. Some very discreet restorations to the binding.
