Georges COURTELINE.
Fear of the blows. Saynette in one act, first performed on the theater of Application on December 14, 1894. Illustrations by Fernand Fau. Paris, Charpentier et Fasquelle, 1895. In-12 of (2) ff., 27 pp. : maroquin noisette à la Bradel, smooth spine, entirely untrimmed, green paper covers printed in blue preserved (Leca). Original edition decorated with eleven vignettes in the text by Fernand Fau. One of the few copies on Hollande, not justified. Autograph signed on the false title: "to Pierre Dauze/de tout coeur/Courteline". A renowned bibliophile, founder of the society Les XX, Pierre Dauze (1852-1913) had commissioned Verlaine to write twenty-four sonnets on bibliophily in order to help him: he composed only thirteen of them before his death, published under the title of Biblio-sonnets in 1913. (Cat. I, 1914, n° 407.) A signed autograph letter addressed to Catulle Mendès is bound at the head of the book (no place or date, 1 page in-8 on squared paper). Courteline congratulates the writer on his Médée (1898): "As for me, I would like you even more, since you did Médée, if I could, very dear friend, love you more than I love you: but, to the impossible, no one is bound." In postscript, he points out a typo to him. Enclosed: Autograph letter signed by Courteline about the loan of a painting, addressed "to my dear master" (1 page in-12). From the library of Doctor Lucien-Graux, with ex-libris (cat. IX, 1959, n° 43).
