Charles DICKENS.
The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club with forty-three illustrations, by R. Seymour and Phiz. London, Chapman and Hall, 1837. In-8 of 1 frontispiece, 1 engraved title, XIV pp., (1) f. address to binder and errata, 609 pp. black calf, smooth spine richly decorated in gold and cold, double framed with gilt filets and cold roulette, with central cold-stamped plate, scattered with gilt pastilles, decorated edges and headpieces, untrimmed, gilt head (Charles de Samblanx). First edition in volume. Inaugural novel, The Pickwick Club had first appeared in issues from April 1836 to November 1837. It was to establish the success of this new form of publication, widely used throughout the Victorian era. The 24-year-old author had previously made a name for himself with his satirical plays published in newspapers under the name of Boz. The illustration consists of 43 plates engraved out of text, 7 of which are by Robert Seymour and 36 by Hablot K. Browne alias Phiz. A delightful copy in richly decorated calf by Charles de Samblanx. It belongs to the first state of the title page (Weller spelled Veller, plates without legends). From the library of Robert Jeanne Percheron, with bookplate. Frontispiece reassembled, small marginal tear not reaching the subject at one plate (pp. 452-453). Attached, by the same author: The Battle of Life. A Love Story. By Charles Dickens. London, Bradbury & Evans, 1946. Small in-12, red morocco, ribbed spine decorated with gilt filleting, double gilt filleting around the boards, gilt filleted edges, inner lace, gilt edges (Rivière & Son). First edition. Dickens' fourth Christmas story, dedicated by the author to his English friends in Switzerland. The illustration consists of a frontispiece, a title-frontispiece and 11 compositions in the text by Daniel Maclise, Clarkson Stanfield, Richard Doyle and John Leech. A fine copy from the J.F. Kinkley library, with bookplate. Publisher's decorated red percale cover and spine bound in at the end. Weak upper spine.
