Charles DICKENS. Our Mutual Friend. With Illustrations by Marcus Stone. In two volumes. London, Chapman and Hall, 1865. 2 volumes in an in-8 volume of 1 frontispiece, pp. III-XI, 320 pp., 19 plates; 1 frontispiece, pp. III-XVIII pp., 309 pp., 19 plates: midnight blue morocco, ornate ribbed spine, double gilt fillet framing the boards, decorated edges and headpieces, gilt roulette on the inner border, gilt edges (G.J. Sawyer Ltd.) First volume edition. It is illustrated with 2 frontispieces and 38 hors texte compositions by Marcus Stone, woodcut by Dalziel and W.T. Green. Dickens' last completed novel appeared in installments between May 1864 and November 1865. There is a signed autograph letter from Charles Dickens to his friend Thomas Mitton dated January 11, 1844 (2 pages in-12). It has been most brilliantly and promptly done. I am glad to find that the publishers are frightened. Meet M Cross of Survey Street, ... with doubled fists, and peg away at him right and left. I think it very likely the printers are in ... At all events let us seem to suppose so, and hold out no appearance of an idea of anything that wants the knife. I am planning and scheming up by 10 tonight, and shall begin, I hope, in good earnest tomorrow morning. I shall expect to hear from you when anything occurs. Faithfully ever Charles Dickens Beautiful copy, bound in decorated morocco. The false titles have not been preserved, as well as the rare notice to the reader, and the advertisements. A delivery cover has been bound in at the end.
