Théophile GAUTIER.
Zigzags. Paris, Victor Magen, 1845. In-8 of (2) ff., 350 pp. misfigured 354 without missing : half lemon morocco with corners, bound in pamphlet, smooth spine decorated throughout, printed cover and spine retained (Canape). First edition. The volume relates the author's peregrinations in the country of the Walloons, in London, in Venice and in Montfaucon. It opens with the account of his "tour in Belgium", in company of Gérard de Nerval, nicknamed Fritz. A very nice copy, with all margins, complete with its fragile covers. From the library of Paul Eluard and Gala, with their names on tiny business cards mounted at the head. They are extracted from the very rare set of "surrealist business cards" made by Jacques Rigaut. What he called "tiny cards", because of their tiny size, were printed on bristol board in different colors: green, yellow, ochre and pink. Each one measures 19 x 36 mm. Bookplate drawn by Max Ernst with the motto "Après moi le sommeil". The table is missing, as always. Restorations to the cover. (Clouzot, p. 126: "Quite rare. The table which is almost always missing has been reprinted by means of a cliché, a trick which is easily distinguished.")
