Théophile GAUTIER.
Le Capitaine Fracasse. Paris, Charpentier, 1863. 2 volumes in-12 with 12 pp. of publisher's catalog, (2) ff, IV pp, 373 pp, (1) f. of table; (2) ff, 382 pp, (1) f. of table, stapled, printed yellow paper covers, modern slipcase. First edition of which no large paper was printed. A work of youth announced as early as 1834, the story of the publication of Capitaine Fracasse was, to say the least, rocky. It even earned its author a lawsuit, the Revue des Deux-Mondes having made him an advance without ever receiving a manuscript. The first edition was a great success, as was the first edition illustrated by Gustave Doré in 1866. The opinion of his relatives was unanimous. It is in this novel of cloak and dagger, which recounts the adventures of a young Gascon who has gone to make his fortune, that Gautier, the prose writer, has put the best of himself. "What a wonder! Be convinced that you have never had more talent!", exclaimed Flaubert upon reading it. Nice copy, paperback. Ex-libris Jean Inglessi on the folder. Lined covers. Spine of the first volume partially split. No copy in the libraries Noilly and Escoffier.
