VICTOR HUGO. - Lot 59
VICTOR HUGO. Six clandestine booklets published during the exile. Jersey, November 1852-1855. 6 plates in-32 of 16 pp. each, modern burgundy half-maroquin slipcase. A precious collection of tiny publications printed in Jersey in order to be discreetly distributed in France. They are all composed of one in-8 sheet folded three times. The present set gathers Nox, Joyeuse Vie, A l'Obéissance passive and L'Expiation - the four excerpts from Les Châtiments distributed between November 1852 and November 1853, in order to promote the firebrand castigating the emperor Napoleon III, under press in Brussels. Added to this is The Letter to Lord Palmerston, Secretary of State for the Interior, England, printed on blue paper in 1854, a famous indictment of the execution of John Charles Tapner by hanging on February 10, 1854 in Guernsey. Then, the Speech of the citizens Victor Hugo, - Amiel, - and L. Pianciani on the occasion of the anniversary of the Revolution of 1848, of February 24, 1855. Paul Eluard was to be inspired by this form publication for the original edition of A toute épreuve (1930). The booklets are preserved as published.
