Ann RADCLIFFE. - Lot 102
Ann RADCLIFFE. The Italian, or the Confessional of the Black Penitents. A Romance. London, T. Cadell, W. Davies, 1797. 3 volumes in-12 of XII pp., 336 pp. ; (1) f., 360 pp. ; (1) f., 444 pp. half calf with vellum corners, smooth spines gilt-stamped, red and green morocco title and giblets, marbled edges (pastiche binding). First edition, of great rarity. A masterpiece of gothic literature, The Italian was translated as soon as it was published by the abbot Morellet. The novel was the last work published by Ann Radcliffe (1764-1823) during her lifetime. A quality copy, with a beautiful female provenance of the time. The three volumes bear the signature F[r] Camden on the titles, as well as the armorial bookplate of the Camden family. Frances Camden, née Molesworth (1766-1829), was the wife of the British statesman John Jeffreys Pratt, first Marquess Camden, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland between 1795 and 1998, and then Secretary of State for War and the Colonies between 1804 and 1805. Joshua Reynolds painted his portrait in 1777, now in the Huntington Library. Restoration in the upper margin of the leaf pp. 301-302 of the first volume, not reaching the text.
