George SAND. - Lot 109
George SAND. Lélia. Paris, Henri Dupuy, L. Tenré, 1833. 2 volumes in-8 of (4) ff. 350 pp; (3) ff. 383 pp. Half green chagrin, spine with four raised bands, spotted edges (19th century binding). First edition. Famous feminist novel by George Sand; it caused a scandal at its publication. Beautiful copy in a slightly later binding from the library of Gustave d'Eichthal, with bookplate. Remarkable provenance of Gustave d'Eichthal (1804-1886), ardent Saint-Simonian and attentive reader, pencil in hand, of George Sand's work. This is evidenced by the multiple marks in the margins as well as this long note on the novel extracted from Lettres d'un voyageur with, underneath, this comment: "There is in these two volumes all the storm of three months of the rue Monsigny" - allusion to the n° 6 of the street where the Saint-Simonians settled in July 1830. It is also where the daily newspaper Le Globe was domiciled, which, in November 1830, was taken over by one of its founders - Pierre Leroux, a friend of George Sand. Another note at the end of the second volume notes "les novateurs (St Simoniens)".
