Paul VERLAINE. - Lot 122
Paul VERLAINE. Dans les limbes. Paris, Léon Vanier, 1894. In-12 with 3 portraits, (3) ff, II, 45 pp, (1) f. of table : tobacco morocco with corners, entirely untrimmed, printed covers and spine preserved (period binding). First edition : it is decorated with an engraved portrait of the poet by Ladislas Loévy. In a letter to his publisher Vanier, Verlaine describes Dans les limbes as "a volume of love, this time very chaste [...]. Les Limbes is the hospital with a visitor" (quoted by Galantaris, Verlaine, Rimbaud, Mallarmé, 2014, n° 198). One of the twenty first copies on japon (n° 10). The first copies are accompanied by an autograph piece, here n° XIV. Bound at the head is a signed autograph poem and two letters from Verlaine: - The poem is the fourteenth in the collection, "C'est fait, littéralement, je l'adore" (signed autograph manuscript, 1 ½ page in-8 on graph paper): the manuscript has small variants with the printed text. - autograph letter signed to Léon Vanier (without place or date, 1 page in-8): he indicates two corrections to be made to the collection and counts on his own "for the typographical perfection of the book". The proofs are to be sent to Mrs. Combes. "Do you have my books of the Count de Montesquiou and my 15 days in Holland [...]. Am I entitled to 25 copies of the Poèmes saturniens and what about Dans les limbes [...]." - autograph letter signed to Léon Vanier (10 April 1894, 2 pages in-8). He asks her to give Miss Krantz copies of Dans les limbes if the volume is published and adds: "Confidential: do not tell anyone that I am going, at the end of the month, to give conferences in the North on Desbordes Valmore. For this purpose please give the Poètes maudits to Miss Krantz [...]". A very nice copy. In addition to the portrait of Ladislas Loévy, two other portraits of Verlaine have been bound in at the head of the book, one of them printed on Chine. From the Lucien-Graux library, with bookplate (cat. III, 1957, n° 241).
