Paul VERLAINE. - Lot 124
Paul VERLAINE. "Hombres" (men). Printed under the cloak and not sold anywhere, [Paris, Albert Messein, 1903]. Booklet in-12 of (2) ff, 48 pp, (2) ff : blue half-percaline à la Bradel, smooth spine, tobacco morocco title-pieces, untrimmed, ochre paper cover printed in green kept (period binding). First edition, posthumous. Limited edition of 525 numbered copies. This one on Hollande van Gelder (n° 65). "Although dated 1891 - except two - these poems belong to a permanent erotic vein in the poet's work. However, the Dizain ingénu, dated 1860, is hardly admissible at this date, Verlaine being then only sixteen years old. Many are haunted by the memory of Rimbaud. The scandalous character of the collection delayed its publication. When Albert Messein, Vanier's successor, published it in 1903, he did not have the original manuscript, dispersed by Verlaine, but a copy in Vanier's hand." (Galantaris, Verlaine, Rimbaud, Mallarmé, 2014, p. 319). An autograph letter signed by the publisher Albert Messein to Mr Champion is attached. July 17 (?) 1909. 1 page in-8. Cover letter for a copy of Hombres, Verlaine posthumous and smokes. He also announces that the edition of Femmes is sold out. Nice copy modestly bound at the time, with its covers. Spine tarnished.
