Surrealist Almanac of the half-century. Special... - Lot 140 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Surrealist Almanac of the half-century. Special issue of La Nef. Paris, Éditions du Sagittaire, March-April 1950. In-8, paperback, preserved in a folio box-sleeve by Pierre Mercier. First edition. It appeared as a special issue of the magazine La Nef (n° 63-64). The original preparatory drawings of the heraldic quinzaines of the painter Marcel Jean (1900-1993) are joined. They are 24 imaginary coats of arms of the figures of surrealism from Swift and Sade to Toyen, Hérold and Pastoureau. They were reproduced in the Almanach surréaliste du demi-siècle (pages 62-64), with some variations. With the exception of the first two, drawn directly on the sheet, they were cut out and mounted on a folio, folded in two. To these 24 original drawings in Indian ink (about 6 x 5 cm), we join the autograph manuscript of the heraldic explanations of the coats of arms (5 sheets in-8, graphite) as well as a large sheet in-4 containing 24 simplified coats of arms which were not reproduced in the surrealist Almanac of the half-century. The whole is gathered in an ingenious box by Pierre Mercier.
