Georges BATAILLE. - Lot 153
Georges BATAILLE. Le Mort. [Paris], Au vent d'Arles, 1964. 2 volumes in oblong folio, one of which for the suite: vellum folder with flaps for the text and half vellum for the suite, case (publisher's slipcase). First edition. Limited edition of 145 copies, all on Richard de Bas mill paper. Famous erotic text by Georges Bataille illustrated with 9 original etchings and aquatints in colors by André Masson. Written between the end of 1942 and the beginning of 1944, it was published two years after the death of the author who "could not bring himself to publish during his lifetime, even under a pseudonym, 'this text of a very bad kind', as he wrote to Henri Parisot in 1947. [The original posthumous edition was a bibliophilic edition, on thick Auvergne paper, whose text printed in gothic type, specially cast for this edition, betrayed before any reading, an atmosphere of disturbing and macabre tale. Among the nine etchings and aquatints in color by André Masson, the one opposite the chapter 'Marie est sucée par Pierrot' (Marie is sucked by Pierrot) is reminiscent of Courbet's painting L'Origine du monde, which Jacques Lacan had bought in 1955 and for which Masson had built a double-bottomed frame, painting a more surrealist and less crude canvas to cover it" (Marie-Françoise Quignard, L'Enfer de la Bibliothèque, Éros au secret, 2019, nº 173). One of the first ten copies (nº I): it is accompanied by the suite of 10 etchings by André Masson, all signed - including one refused plate. However, the original drawing and the scratched copperplate that were to be attached have not been preserved. Transfer of the prints to the surrounding leaves. (Saphire-Cramer, 66.- Pia, Les Livres de l'Enfer, 961.)
