Jorge Luis Borges. - Lot 168
Jorge Luis Borges. Ficciones (1935-1944). Buenos Aires, SUR, 1944. In-8, paperback, blue printed paper cover. First edition: it is illustrated with a portrait of the author in frontispiece by Marie-Elisabeth Wrede. Collection of short stories considered with Aleph as the major book of Borges (1899-1986). Exceptional signed autograph letter under the portrait to the author: With my respects to your highness/Marie-Elizabet Wrede/Jorge Luis Borges 1944. Painter of Austrian origin, student of Fernand Léger and Ozenfant, Marie Elisabeth Wrede (1898-1981) was above all a portraitist. A friend of Paul Valéry who considered her own portrait by M.E. Wrede as "the most faithful interpretation that has been given of my personality", she made portraits of many personalities of the Arts and Letters: Picasso, Jouhandeau, Bernard Shaw, Jean Paulhan, Colette, etc. The copy bears reading marks throughout, probably by M.E. Wrede, passages noted in the margin or words and sentences underlined, with three notes on pages 96, 188 and 194. Amusing detail, in the prologue, next to the mention of "Pierre Menard autor del Quijote", the famous news about a book taken from Borges' imagination, the annotator - or annotator - has written a question mark. Paper browned and brittle, as always. Worn cover.
