Joë BOUSQUET. - Lot 175
Joë BOUSQUET. [Undated [ca. 1948]. Autograph manuscript with erasures, additions and corrections, in blue and red ink, 19 pages in-4. Working manuscript of a study devoted to Eluard - "the greatest poet of this time." It was written after the reading of the Political Poems published in 1948 with a preface by Aragon to which the manuscript refers. Bousquet pays homage to the one who knew how to invent the method that Rimbaud had suggested, the vision as being. With Paul Eluard, the image is first. It is a dawn and is intraverted in a word which is a form. But every form is the inner side of another form: a threat to time, a threat to space, the salvation of both. [We no longer have the right to ignore that his poetics was an ontology. Mysticism of the being, experience, in part esoteric of which his poetries, his dreams shared us day by day the reward, inseparable of the accession to a right and whole life. Without indulging in reverie, without lyrical illusions, he founded a new moral order on true values. This highly corrected manuscript, with certain passages taken up and reworked, and additions in the line spaces, gives an account of the importance of Bousquet's encounter with the Surrealists, and more particularly with the poetry of Eluard, which distracted him "from a disgust that was greater than my misfortune," as he wrote to Maurice Nadeau in 1945.
