André BRETON. - Lot 189
André BRETON. [Materialism and Empiriocriticism, reading notes]. Undated [Castellane, August 1931]. Autograph manuscript of (10) ff. in a school book of the Canton of Valais of (20) ff. Precious autograph document, these reading notes reveal the first traces left by Lenin's philosophical sum in André Breton's thought. Materialism and Empiriocriticism, published in 1928, became one of the capital sources of the Vases Communicants. The first seven pages are devoted exclusively to Lenin's work, which Breton discovered through Georges Sadoul in the summer of 1931 in Castellane: "I have just made Breton read Materialism and Empiriocriticism, and he has read it with passionate attention. This book has struck him very much and this reading, he says, will make him modify considerably the book that he proposes to write", confided the latter to André Thirion at the end of August 1931 (quoted in Breton, OEuvres II, Bibliothèque de la Pléiade, p. 1360). The three following sheets refer to "dialectical materialism and its struggle with mechanistic and idealist concepts", an abridgment of the theses of L. Piper, Seminar of Marxist philosophy.
