GENET, Jean.
Draft of a will. Paris, undated [1984]. Autograph manuscript signed and initialed several times, 3 pages in-4 on lined paper. TWO YEARS BEFORE HIS DEATH, ILL, JEAN GENET ORGANIZES HIS SUCCESSION: AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT OF HIS DRAFT WILL SIGNED TWICE AND INITIALED FOUR TIMES. The will itself occupies two pages; the letter addressed to Jacques Maglia which completes it forms the third page. The poet Lydie Dattas, wife of Alexandre Bouglione, is named executrix. (It is known that Jean Genet had a falling out with her husband shortly afterwards and was chased out of the apartment he occupied, which was owned by the Bougliones). Jacques Maglia is designated as legatee. "Mr. Jacques Maglia undertook to collect all my royalties. I count on him to give the shares - carried on another document - to Mr Ahmed Lucien Lahoucine and to Mr Mohammed El Ketrani [...]. By this document, I give all the powers to Miss Datas so that she can make my demands succeed. No one - I mean no one - apart from these four names that I repeat: Miss Lydie Dattas, Mr. Jacques Maglia, Mr. Ahmed Lahoussine, Mr. Mohammed El Katrani, to which I add that of . Claude Gallimard, no one will have the right or the power to intervene in the affairs I leave behind after my death. No one will be able to take advantage of manuscripts by my hand, nor of anything else concerning me, to intervene in my legacy, in one way or another, without the agreement of Miss Dattas and Mr. Jacques Maglia." The question of copyright on foreign editions is raised ("It is understood that Éditions Gallimard remain the managers of my works abroad"), and Lydie Dattas is in charge of the choice of translators. In the letter to Jacques Maglia that accompanies the will, Jean Genet returns to the division by thirds of his inheritance: "I am counting on you to see that this is done, and I am counting on them to see that there is no disagreement about what I leave you. I embrace you all."
