First edition : it was printed in a small number. The work is sometimes dated 1899; it was published in September 1897, according to the correspondence of André Gide. One of 2 copies on Hollande Van Gelder Zonen paper. Notes of the honeymoon that Madeleine and André Gide undertook after their wedding, in October 1895, in Switzerland, Italy and Algeria. They will be inserted in the Journal in 1932. Autograph letter signed on the false-title: to André Ruÿters // erratically // André Gide. A Belgian novelist and poet naturalized in France in 1908, André Ruyters (1876-1952) was, along with André Gide, Jacques Copeau and Jean Schlumberger, one of the founders of the Nouvelle Revue Française. A second work by André Gide with a letter to André Ruyters is attached: Philoctète. Le Traité du Narcisse. La Tentative amoureuse. El Hadj. Paris, Éditions du Mercure de France, 1899. In-8 [185 x 145] of (2) ff, the first blank, 176 pp, (2) ff : contemporary embossed paper boards decorated with stylized black and brown flowers, smooth spine, untrimmed, cover retained. Spine unstuck. Original editions of Philoctète and El Hadj. Le Traité du Narcisse and La Tentative amoureuse had previously appeared at the Librairie de l'Art indépendant in 1891 and 1893. Limited edition of 300 numbered copies on Arches laid paper (no. 107). Signed autograph letter: to André Ruyters // with love // André Gide.
