Limited edition of 300 numbered copies on Arches laid paper (no. 249). Autograph signed on the title page: to Eugène Rouart // his friend // André Gide The politician and writer Eugène Rouart (1872-1936) was a key figure in the life of André Gide. The importance of their relationship was underlined by David H. Walker at the beginning of the edition of the correspondence of the two friends, published in 2006: "One cannot fully understand the work and life of André Gide without noting the essential place held by his friendship with Eugène Rouart. From 1893 to 1936, the links between the two men, often tense, sometimes distant, remained affectionate and above all effective, in spite of the events and the ideas which could disturb their relations. Their correspondence is one of the most important, and also one of the most revealing, among those that Gide maintained with the most notable of his contemporaries. [...] Dedicated to Paludes, Eugène Rouart wrote a novel, La Villa sans maître, which inspired L'Immoraliste where the chapters on agricultural activity in particular bear the imprint of this man whose life Gide would say was 'the most complicated, the most abundant and the most dramatic' that he could have seen." Interesting contemporary binding. Spine and edges of boards slightly faded, stains on cover. Scattered foxing on the first few leaves. Discreet restoration to the upper cover. Provenance : Eugène Rouart, with a letter from the author - Pr. Pertuiset, with a bookplate.
