GIDE, André.
Books. [January 1900] Autograph manuscript of 9 pp. in-4 [220 x 175], in sheets, in modern half-maroquin folder. Autograph manuscript: literary column dedicated to Villiers de L'Isle-Adam's Histoires souveraines, published in La Revue blanche on February 1, 1900. The text, which will be reprinted in 1903 in Prétextes, marks Gide's debut as a columnist at La Revue blanche, replacing Léon Blum to whom he pays tribute. Review of the edition published in Brussels by Deman in 1899 of Histoires souveraines, a posthumous collection of stories by Villiers de l'Isle-Adam: "For the greatest joy of a small number of chosen ones, Mr. Deman, as an amateur bookseller rich in leisure time and as an artist of high taste, sometimes completes a new printing that preciously adorns Redon, Van Rysselberghe or Renoir. The books that he offers us then with slowness are beautiful, as were almost all those of Verhaeren, or the recent republication of Stéphane Mallarmé's poems; but never was the success of Mr Deman happier than for this anthology of Villiers." The manuscript was used for the printing, as the notes intended for the typographer indicate. The chronicle published in the magazine includes at the end a short note on the Joueurs de boules de Saint-Mandé by Maurice Beaubourg which is not found here. Provenance: Daniel Sicklès, with his name marked in pencil on the back of each leaf.
