GIDE, André.
L'Immoraliste. Paris, Société du Mercure de France, 1902. In-12 [166 x 106] of 257 pp, (1) f. : blue morocco, boards decorated with a red morocco scroll between two double gilt fillets, framing a series of black loops interspersed with gilt dots, spine ribbed and decorated in the same spirit, fawn morocco lining bordered with a gilt fillet and decorated with a frame composed of a gilt fillet and gilt loops at the corners, blue moiré silk endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine preserved (Tchékéroul). First edition : it was printed at 300 copies on Arches laid paper. The work of maturity occupies a pivotal position. "It completes the gospel of sensual liberation of the Nourritures terrestres. From now on, it is Gide himself who will be called for a long time the Immoralist" (Claude Martin). Autograph letter signed on the title page: to Marcel Schwob // with kind regards // André Gide The copy was "kindly" offered in spite of the disagreement between the two writers about Les Nourritures terrestres, published in 1897. Schwob considered the work as a plagiarism of the Livre de Monelle (1894). Gide appreciated Marcel Schwob's work : "I don't know what he could have given in the future, but already his Mimes, his Livre de Monelle and his Croisade des enfants offer us pages of a literary perfection that it would have been difficult for him to exceed" (Essais critiques). A very nice copy in morocco lined and decorated by Tchékéroul. Provenance : Marcel Schwob, with a letter from the author. - Georges Donckier de Donceel, with ex-libris. In French in the text, Paris, BN, 1990, nº 330: notice by Claude Martin - Connolly, Cent livres-clés de la littérature moderne, nº 13.
