GIDE, André.
La Porte étroite. Paris, Société du Mercure de France, 1909. In-12 [184 x 105] of 254 pp, (2) ff. the last one blank : bradel half black morocco with corners, smooth spine, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine preserved (Mercher). Second edition, completed on June 20, 1909, only eight days after the original. Copy of the press service. Precious autograph letter signed on the false title: to Guillaume Apollinaire // in cordial memory // André Gide The relationship between these two monuments of French literature was not obvious, as Pierre-Marcel Adéma pointed out: "Their relationship was never very close, although Apollinaire knew Gide's work and particularly liked La Porte étroite. They had undoubtedly met at Vers et Prose, at La Phalange and at some writers' banquets, but nothing really brought them together. Gide, on his side, seems to have been more interested in the personality of Apollinaire, 'who amuses and seduces him'. Clear-sighted, this one will say, a little later, of Gide: 'With the remainder I believe that he likes me well and I worry him by exciting his curiosity but I could never bring myself to collaborate in the new French review which is its review (I do not know why)' (Guillaume Apollinaire, 1968, p. 179).
