Second edition, partly original, of the French translation by André Gide: it is enlarged with a long introduction by the translator. Autograph signed on the title page: to Remy de Gourmont // in cordial memory // André Gide. Gourmont noticed André Gide very early, as soon as the Cahiers d'André Walter was published in 1891. The beginning of their relationship was courteous, Gourmont having praised Paludes in his first Book of Masks (1896). These relations became more difficult thereafter. "That Gourmont is odious to me (as a writer) does not prevent me from considering him today among all..." Soiling to the cover. Scattered foxing.
