First edition of the French translation by André Gide, dedicated to André Ruyters. Edition of 300 numbered copies on Rives laid paper (n° 72). Autograph letter signed on the false-title: to Edmund Gosse // in loving // and grateful memory // André Gide. // Cambridge // July-Sept. 18 Poet and art critic, Edmund Gosse (1849-1928) was one of the first to promote the work of André Gide in Great Britain. The two men had been corresponding since 1904, but did not meet until 1918, during Gide's stay in England. Provenance : Edmund Gosse, with a consignment from the author - Jacques Dennery, with bookplate (1984, II, n° 72).
