GIDE, André.
Si le grain ne meurt. Paris, [Bruges : imprimerie Sainte-Catherine], 1920-1921. 2 volumes in-8 [225 x 140] of 220 pp, (4) ff. the third one blank ; 166 pp, (1) f. : maroquin bordeaux janséniste, spine with nerves, lining edges to edges of maroquin bordeaux, edges gilded on witnesses, cover and spine kept (Huser). First edition out of trade, of a great rarity. Only 12 copies of the first volume and 13 of the second were printed on candle paper (n° 2 and 12). The autobiographical account of the first twenty-six years of his life caused a scandal because of the frankness of the revelations about his sexual life: Gide was eager to launch this offensive against prejudice by publishing during his lifetime Si le grain ne meurt, of which he will give the complete version in 1924. Superb copy in lined bindings by Huser. Minor brown spots in the first volume.
